Patiently waiting on the Hummingbirds

I follow a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird migration map and the map shows that we’ve had a few sightings in southern, lower Michigan and since this weekend is going to be gorgeous, I’ve decided it’s time to put a feeder out to hopefully attract a migrating hummer.  You can check the migration status by clicking on this link http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

It is best to make your own nectar for our littlest feathered friends because their little bodies cannot process the red dye and preservatives that are found in store bought nectars.  It’s incredibly easy and I’ll share my recipe below.

Hummingbird Nectar

  • 4:1 ratio of water to sugar

This morning I boiled 2 cups of water and then added 1/2 cup of sugar to the water and stirred until the sugar was dissolved.  Remove from heat and let it cool. Once cooled it’s ready to pour into your desired feeder.

It is important to change your nectar and thoroughly clean your feeder every couple of days, even daily if the temperature is very warm or if the feeder gets direct sun exposure.  You can store the leftover nectar mixture in the refrigerator for up to one week, so it can easily be made ahead.
