Our friend, the Blue Jay

Blue Jay’s are one of those birds that you either love or hate; personally, I love them!  These birds have a LOT of personality and some people think of them as bullies.  I’ve often joked that the Blue Jays in my area have surveillance on me; I can go out to fill their feeder and there is not one to be heard or in sight but within seconds of replacing their filled feeder, they are swooping in to claim their snack.  This summer I caught my pet bird, Harry, calling back and forth with the Blue Jays that were perched on my pergola; they’d squawk and he’d squawk back to them.

I’ve compiled a couple of interesting facts on Blue Jays:

  • Blue Jays normally fly at speeds of 20-25 miles per hour!
  • Blue Jays will mimic calls of predatory raptors in order to tell if their predators are around.
  • It’s very hard to distinguish between males and females due to exact plumage.  The only difference is that males are larger.
  • The Blue Jay resonates truth, faithfulness and solidarity because they are vigilant in their tasks.  They also keep the same mate for life, which is symbolic of endurance, patience and loyalty.  In the spiritual realm, the Blue Jay speaks of clarity and vision.
  • They prefer to nest in evergreen trees and shrubs 10-35 feet off the ground.

I just love it when the sun shines on them to show off that beautiful blue/purple color!
