Did you know…..

Just some fun facts about Cardinals, one of my favorite species of birds.

  • Northern cardinals have been honored as the official state bird of seven different states; Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia all have designated the northern cardinal as their symbolic bird.  The cardinal is the most of any single bird species to have this designation.
  • Cardinals do not migrate, and as a result they live their entire lives within one or two kilometers of where they were hatched.
  • It is illegal to own a cardinal as a pet or to kill one; they are a government protected wild bird species and protected pursuant to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
  • Legends state that the cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed.  When you see one, it means they are visiting you.  They usually show up when you most need them.  They also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know they will always be with you.  Look for them, they’ll appear.

At 3:50 this afternoon, the deer decided to show up.  I swear they have surveillance on me like the blue jays do; I had just filled the bird feeder and they decided to empty it.  I find it interesting that one of the smaller deer is still trying to nurse on it’s mother.  Most of my pictures are taken through my sliding glass door, hence the reason they aren’t super crisp.  I have to take what I can get. 🙂  The spots on the deer are the reflection of the lights on our Christmas tree.  That thing has to come down!
