Mourning Doves

I’ve been suspecting that we had a Mourning Dove nest in our Fountain Cherry tree.  The last couple of nights that I’ve been working around the tree, I’ve had a dove vacate the area when I get close and tonight I spotted two, cute little baby doves running from me.  I’m not sure who would want to hunt these little cuties but it’s sure not me!

Here’s a few facts about Mourning Doves:

  • They eat mostly seeds; that would explain why they flock to my feeders and clean up the ground underneath.
  • They have a relatively short life span; adults only live for about a year and a half.
  • They are overly abundant; it’s estimated that there are approximately 350 million.
  • Nearly 45 million are harvested yearly.
  • They are one of the only birds that can sip water!
  • They mate for life.
  • They can fly up to speeds of 55 mph!
  • The male is usually the one making the cooing sound.
