It’s time to start spring cleaning!

It looks like the weather will finally be easing up on us; it’s about time!  It’s also time to clean out your Bluebird houses, which I have on my agenda to do this weekend.  I’m actually a little late in the game this year.   Bluebirds will begin to scout for nesting sites in March.

You should remove any debris in your houses and spray them down with a 10% bleach water solution to disinfect anything that may be contaminating the interior.  It’s also a good time to check to make sure they are in good condition and make any necessary repairs.  If you’re thinking of adding Bluebird houses, it’s a good time to put them up.

I hopped on the internet last week and looked at the hummingbird migration map and they have started their trip north.  You can watch the progress by clicking here.  My usual map is no longer available and was exclusive to Ruby-throats; the one I linked to will show various species.  If you click on a pin, it will tell you the date it was reported and the species.  It’ll still be a while before they make their way to Michigan and if it doesn’t start to warm up, it’ll be a long while.

Don’t forget, our winter residents still need our help since we still have a significant amount of snow cover.
